How to choose a coach.
The coaching industry attracts consultants, therapists, and people with good intentions who want to help. But because there's currently no industry regulation, the prospective coaching client should choose a coach wisely, and here are some tips on how to do just that:
Coaching has come from the heavily hyped US market. Now there
is a huge variation of coaching specializations including life
coaching, personal coaching, leadership, experiential, executive,
success, corporate, relationship,remedial coaching, retention,
change, mentor, developmental and situational coaching and career
coaching.
It can be a bit confusing so let's simplify way choosing a coach for you, so you can get the outcome you want. First, there are four basic categories of coach: Personal Growth, business, executive and personal.
A Personal Growth Coach should have a clear understanding
of the laws of the universe, comprehend the spiritual world that
oversees all that happens, and work with the timeless, universal
principles that determine success in any and every endeavor.
A business coach should have some formal coach training, a degree in business studies or significant business experience, and have some the confidence and ability to come up with creative breakthrough ideas with you. As a bonus they should have tools and information that you can use in your current circumstances.
An executive coach should have formal coach
training, experience of the business world and executive life,
the ability to meet you on the same intellectual level, the
ability to work with both their heart and their head, the ability
to speak your language and understand the dynamics or your current
circumstances, a knowledge of how to navigate corporate culture.
Other questions:
A personal coach should have the ability
to relate to you, have a wide experience of life, be someone
you feel you can trust with your most intimate thoughts and
ideas, and who you feel comfortable to discuss anything that
is going through your head with.
What is a Master Coach?
It varies depending on who is who decided to award that distinction
upon a person. Some people come out and declare themselves to
be master coaches. Others like myself have been awarded this
title by independent organizations based on their ability to
run a successful coaching business, to help people succeed in
each area of life including their health, their career, their
business, their finances, their relationships, their emotional
life, and their spiritual life.
Other things to consider when evaluating a coach:
- Does the coach publish books or articles?
-
Does the coach offer products and services in addition to coaching?
-
Is the coach qualified in business?
-
Does the coach have a wide range of business experience?
-
Does the coach have significant experience as a coach?
-
Is the coach passionate about what they do?
The coach provides encouragement and support to enhance your skills, experience,
resources, and creativity. A skilled coach will engage you in
fun dialogue, provide new insights and information, draw out
the best of you, work with you to brainstorm ideas, and ultimately
let you decide what's the best action to take.
Other ways to learn about a coach:
- Read their bio, and ask about their background.
-
Ask them if they've worked through the issues you're having.
- Visit their web site and see how they market themselves.
-
Look for testimonials and get real referrals
-
Ask for names and numbers of clients to contact, to validate the coach's work.
Call them to ask specific questions such as:
- What was it like to be coached by this person?
-
Did they help you achieve your goals?
-
Would you hire this coach again?
Trust your instincts when deciding whether or not the coach truly understands who you are and what you need. You may want:
- A coach who's direct and will act as a constant "swift kick in the behind."
-
A coach who provides advice and talks about their experiences.
-
A coach who listens as you pull the answers from inside yourself.
Ultimately, you will want a coach with whom you have great rapport, who you would trust with certain details of your life as well as your observations, who will not judge you.

Is this you :
"As someone who was initially unconvinced that coaching
would be worth the time and the money required...
Would you like to be able to say this? ...
I can now honestly reflect on how much value the process
has given me, in my business life and in my personal
life. There is no doubt that I now have more confidence
and certainty with where I am heading, and this has
meant that I am enjoying the journey far more
than I would have without Lee's influence. It's very good to
know that I have met someone who is 100% committed
to seeing me reach the highest levels and who
has the coaching skills to make a difference in my life."Phil
